Default Crashed today

Hi, I'm totally new to Reaper, coming from Sonar and Cubase for years. I really like Reaper so far.

Today I tried to do a real life session after about 4 days of setup and testing, simply recording a vocal over a single music track. Everything was good, I had just added a plugin on a blank track, it loaded no problem. I then went to route some vocal tracks to it, using the drag function from the route box in the mixer. Thats when it froze, totally froze and literally stopped my whole rig. If it was able to open again, all my device settings were gone and could not be found. Even if I tried to open Sonar, all drivers gone. If I opened reaper and set the drivers, then tried to open that project, it would crash again. Only with a hard restart did my drivers show up and work again. I just finished the session with Sonar and haven't had a chance to report this. Just got "accepted" to the forum a few minutes ago.

I really want this to work, I have heard that Reaper never crashes, but if anyone can break anything it is I. I'm really hoping this is something completely avoidable because so far I am really impressed.

Win10, i7, 12gb, VS700 (roland soundcard/driver)

This sounds to me like the audio driver crashed, not Reaper (but the driver pulled Reaper with it). This is why it wouldn't work with Sonar either.

Also, it's not that Reaper never crashes. It's just VERY RARE. There's no uncrashable software.

I'd suggest completely uninstalling then reinstalling your soundcard drivers.

well, the driver worked once I restarted. And it was fine up until I tried to load that project in reaper. I tried this 3 times, each time it crashed. If I opened another project, no problem. If I opened Sonar, no problem.

It only affected sonar when I tried to run sonar after reaper crashed without restarting the computer.

What if you try to load the Reaper project with all FX offline?

I tried to open it with a right click but not options for offline came up. Tried to open it normally and froze again. I only had 2 plugins: Meter tap on the master, and Nectar 2 on an audio track.

I have deleted that project and will try again.

When you open a project from the File->Open dialog, there's a checkbox to load with FX offline.

Hello again. I am now looking at a white screen and reaper is not responding.

I think for sure it is the iZotope plugs. I simply tried to launch Insight as a dx and it locked up

Last time it was Nectar. Anyone else have issues with iZotope?

Dang, this will be a deal breaker for me if so.

Any advice?

Lots of people including me. And that is on Sonar and Studio One as well as reaper. They do seem a bit fussy.

I've never had issue using Izotope plugs with Sonar, not in the 3 years I've had these plugings. I also used them in Cubase without any issue, on a lesser laptop.

After I posted this, I launched another session, and loaded 4 instances of Nectar 2 with no issue (aside from slow loading)....and Insight. I know they are intense plugins, but I need them in my life.

Yeah - my experiences put me off investing a lot of time and money in them, which is a shame - neat plugins. I may have to try again. Still got my old licences.
