When I hit "Save", all the files should save in the same folder!
Why is this -NOT- a default?
When I save a song, I expect ALL the files will be saved to one specific folder.
But apparently, that's not how Reaper works as it stores files in C:/Documents and Settings..." too!
With all due respect.... WTF???!??!?!??!!!
So, all the songs I -thought- I was backing up, were not properly backed up, and I've lost nearly everything in a recent hard-drive crash.
(Except a few songs that miraculously were intact.)
If I were to install Reaper on a flash drive, and use it to record a song, would ALL the files I'd need actually be on the flash drive, when I hit "Save"?
Really reeling from this hard drive crash, and losing nearly all my work is pretty painful. I really thought that I was backing up properly - which I did, with two external drives.
Really upset with Reaper, at the moment.

Two things:
Reaper will simply save to the last place it was pointed to. Do a 'save as' when you first start a session and everything will in fact go to the folder you make/choose. Reaper's default has to be somewhere if you neglect to point it to your preferred spot. Or you can give Reaper your preferred default location in preferences.
Hard drive crashes. It's not 'if'. It's 'when'.
Make backup clones of your volumes with an app like Carbon Copy Cloner. Clone the whole volume and especially your system volume(s). Don't rely on manually backing things up file by file.
You have to put a slight effort into keeping track of your files yourself. Nothing broken here.

Saving songs...all files in a single location
Who in their right minds will hit "save" before they record?
Sorry, but even if that -was- a solution, it isn't a logical one.
Serr...I appreciate your having taken the time to respond.
I still maintain the default SHOULD be that everything saves to one, single location automatically. There is nothing I have ever seen in my many hours of using Reaper, that would have lead me to think that the files would NOT be all in one single location, automatically.
When you install the program, THAT is the time that this should be addressed.
One should not find out about this AFTER having used the program for over a year or more.
As for backing up, I did that.
I backed up my files onto two different hard drives.
I even copied that "Reaper Media" folder inside C:/Documents & Settings... , and copied that folder onto my new computer.
As it turned out, very few of those files belonged to the songs I'd lost.
I mean no disrespect, but this is a BIG problem.

Anybody who wanted to create a separate directory for each project, like you want to. There's check boxes for that and for copying wavs to the new folder.
Read the manual and take the time to set up your recording paths and none of this will be a problem. It's hard to believe you've been recording for a year without doing this, and without checking your backups.

Yes it's different but that's how it is. Chapter 3 (3.3 specifically) of the fine manual makes it clearer. This manual is great to chip away at to peel the onion that is Reaper. Enjoy the ride.
3.3
After creating a file it is a good idea to save it, using the File, Save Projectcommand, or the keyboard
shortcut Ctrl S. You will need to specify a project file NAME. When savinga new file you are offered a number
of options (right). If you select the options to
Create subdirectory for project and Move
all media into project directory, the
project and all its media files will
automatically be saved into their own folder.

Anyone who wishes to remain in their right minds. The recorded file has to go somewhere while it is being recorded saving tells it where that should be.
1. Because a project should only contains the files from that project.
2. So you don't loose important recordings.
The only time you shouldn't save first is when you don't care about saving anything and it's intended to be a throwaway otherwise, save it first. It makes the most sense long term. If you must mix project files, set the default and they should always go there until you save.

Please accept my sincere apologies....
Hey...
Ummm...it seems that I was a bit mistaken about this.
As it turns out, the "missing files" were actually the files from Roland VS-1680, that weren't being converted to wav files.
The solution was to replace the 64-bit version with the 32-bit version, and add a certain .dll file to the plugins!
It wasn't a "Reaper issue", at all!
****WHEW****
So sorry.
PS: "...and the 'DUH' award go out to ...envelope please... ME!"

Thanks for your honesty, and for posting this so others viewing the thread in the future would have all the information.

Saving songs...all files in a single location
You're quite welcome.
I truly love using Reaper, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone who might be interested.
Glad to know Reaper is still every bit as good as I'd thought it was.
As good as it might be, nothing compares to the responsiveness of the members of these forums.
Just incredible.
Peace,
K8ch
