Default [WINE] Reaper crashes often with WINE 1.7.38 (FIXED)

Hello!

I run Reaper with WINE (Xubuntu 14.10) and got into problems since the newest WINE-Version. Reaper crashes sometimes and it's not obvious under which circumstances. So I can't reproduce this error, except waiting for it of course. Is there anybody getting the same error? Or is it just me?

It seems to be a problem with Firefox. The error always appears while I work with Firefox and Reaper at the same time. Ideas?

Problem still persists. Even with other distributions (Fedora 21, Ubuntu 15.04) than Xubuntu 14.10 and with other versions of WINE Reaper crashes often.

It's NOT a problem with firefox but with every action of tabbing around. If I stay in Reaper without doing anything (file manager, thunderbird, etc.) Reaper runs flawless.

Any ideas?

I removed all plugins and reinstalled Reaper several times so this won't be a solution.

Five months (!!!) of having this problem and still no comments? As I read other threads it seems to me that I'm not the only one facing this bug. Furthermore it seems to be NO specific problem with WINE. Mollvik for example is using Windows and describes the same issues.

Version 4.62 runs flawless. Is this the only workaround?

I am on Windows 7, run the v5preXX (latest pre), use Firefox at the same time and have zero problems.

Using Reaper with Wine is not supported, plenty of people use Reaper with FireFox in a supported configuration with no issues. Even if Firefox were to cause the issue in your environment it's still not an issue to be fixed from reaper's side IMO.

I'd suggest you stop using Firefox or use Reaper in a supported configuration.

Thanks for your answer. But it seems you didn't read all of my posts.

And for the WINE-thing:

In the meantime I tried it myself in Windows 8 and problems are the same here.

And because you wrote that Reaper is not supported for WINE. I found this on the download page:

Quote:
Windows versions also support Wine/Wine64
As Reaper is a commercial product this would be a wrong promise.

If you are having the same problem with regular Reaper for Windoze in Win 8, it is very unlikely that you have discovered a new bug, since gazillions of us are running reaper in win 8 & 8.1, myself included, with no such issues.
Would you post a crashlog for the windows crash you are having, please?

Mollvik seems to have the same problem.

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=153890
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=159325

There are some more reports which COULD refer to my problem because they are related to the new 4.7x-versions and seem to occur at the same way:

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=159698
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=149708

And it IS a problem with new reaper versions. I currently run (a I wrote before) Reaper 4.62 without this bug. I also tried the new Reaper5-pre - same problem.

Sorry, I only installed Win8 to make clear that this problem isn't only a WINE-bug. Afterwards I removed Win8. So I can't give you the bug report but I'm pretty sure it should look like Mollvik's.

But maybe my hardware can be of interest:

Could you condense the multiple pages down a bit with a synopsis of what cpu, ram, etc. you have?
My german is non-existent but it looks like you are running on an Intel Atom cpu????

Wonder what Mollvik is on?

I can also confirm this problem. The newest version of Reaper crashes consistently in Wine, whereas v4.75 rev 5cd45f works fine.

This bug is still alive and killing. I have tried new installations of Reaper 5.0 in WINE versions 1.5 and 1.7.49, and it still exhibits the same behavior.

Does Reaper have a preferred WINE version?

That is weird. I've been using REAPER on Linux for more than 2 years and never had this sort of problem or crash. Are you guys using REAPER 5? This thread is quite old and speaks of version 4, so I'm wondering. I didn't try 5 yet on Linux, didn't find the time to do it yet, been somewhat busy with some JSFX... anyway.

Do you guys use wine-staging or plain WINE? wine-staging has native Pulse Audio support, and while I'm sure most prefer JACK & wineASIO for low latency, I don't really do low latency work on linux so can't say.

However, you should try it and see if it fixes this problem. Don't worry, wine-staging installs alongside wine and all its files will be under /opt/wine-staging so it won't interfere with anything.

Granted I've only used Linux Mint, not Ubuntu, might be a problem with Unity as well? Can't say.

Also do you use several WINE apps at same time or just REAPER? Do you use separate WINEPREFIX for reaper?

To install wine-staging:
Code:
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pipelight/stable
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install --install-recommends wine-staging
Lastly you need to specify /opt/wine-staging/bin/wine /path/to/reaper.exe when running it instead of just 'wine', just write a simple script or launcher to do it.

By the way: my only small problem with Reaper in WINE is performance-related, but these 2 settings (in v4) should make it MUCH smoother:

Preferences->Audio->Buffering:

Set Use new alternate worker thread scheduling (experimental, may use less CPU) <---- uses about half CPU on scheduling, with tons of tracks it's noticeable!

Unset Use native events for synchronizing (recommended).

Up to and including version 4.75, Reaper was also very stable on my system.

I tried 1.7.9-staging but, alas, the recent versions of Reaper still crash. When I overwrite these Reaper installations with the older v4.75, everything works fine again. (Well, *mostly* fine - there have always been a few bugs with SWS and media import.)

I am using Linux Mint KDE.

I have tried setting up a separate prefix using PlayOnLinux, and I tried closing all other WINE apps, but this did not help either.

Well I spoke too soon.

I just tried REAPER 5 on Linux for the first time, and got the crash after 5min... so I can confirm, you were right, sorry.

Strange that my 4.78 works great, though.

EDIT: I've no idea if it's the same crash but this is the first time I *ever* had a crash with reaper on linux, so it worries me.

I was told to post this here, I've been trying to get Reaper to run for some time but it's worthless in WINE. Originally running the last 4.X build someone mentioned this thread and that 4.75 was the last build that would be stable in WINE. It is not...many 64bit builds of 4 and 5 all crash and exhibit instability. In a last test just to see I grabbed a 32bit 4.78 and it seems stable. I can't use 32bit but the problem seems to be with 64bit builds for me. Going to have to give up on Reaper and learn to deal with Ardour...

Fix coming in 5.01rc2, hopefully! Sorry it took so long! The bug was introduced in 2011, and some subtle changes in 4.76's WDL_HeapBuf caused it to fail miserably. *embarrassed*.

Are you all (who have these crashes) using normal "WaveOut" audio?
I am using WaveOut. (I have not tried any other audio output settings.)

Good news!

I installed v5.0 again, and changed the Audio device to WASAPI with Out: Default. I have not (yet...) had another crash despite tabbing to other programs and doing all kinds of random things in Reaper.

Default reaper crashes after opening video preview window

I want seem to get the video editing running in reaper. It did work before, I believe it was in 4.7 or so.I can import a video, I can even render it. But as soon as I open the video preview window, in any situation, reaper crashes. I run Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit. I have wine 1.6.2.

Now hold on, here is my crash details. Go for it, Justin! And many thanks in advance from here!

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x8955fc71 in 32-bit code (0x8955fc71).

Default video works again, but....

I managed to get the video editing working again in Reaper (by reinstalling reaper 32 bit). I can preview the video as well without the preview windows crashing reaper.

I was also even using the video processor as a plug in.

Great!

But last night disaster struck. I did something stupid and my whole system became unstable. So I reinstalled everything. I did a clean install of reaper 32bit in wine on 64 bit ubuntustudio. Everything OK. Except, when I open videoprocessor in fx loop, the interface of video processor is not shown.

I might have forgotten to install some .dll maybe? Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

I was really over the moon about editing video in reaper after 11 months of using shitty Linux video editors.

Now it's back to square one...
