Default The Amalgamation Part (.ReaParts)

my all-time FR..

i hope it makes sense to you, but if you dont get it, please read this thread: (and watch some video about the concept)

http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8196

these Amalgamation Parts should be treated just like the MIDI items like : move, hard/GHOST copy (loop), trim, fade, split, vol adjust.. and should be SAVED/LOADED as a track template (Beat locked), so it'd mean we could work with real MultiTrack "elements".

(Audio _AND_ MIDI items)

bbb

(thanks Bungle for putting this .gif together )

Yes, this would be "the shit"! (Although it's not too bad for me personally to use the already existing feature where a rendered wav from a project can contain the reference to the project and you can then open the project from another Reaper project...)

you mean this one:

http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthre...=render+window ?

yes Xenakios, thats a workaround (and a lifesaver in some cases), but with this concept we could be able to tweak the Amalgamation Part LOOPED while the "Master Session" plays - in sync. (rock solid, sample accurate sync. )

Yes, that's what I mean. It works pretty well for me already but it does certainly have the downside that nothing is REALLY quickly tweakable from within the Master Session.

These "Amalgamate Items" that you propose would be especially cool if it was possible to render them to new audio files quickly, i.e. essentially Freeze them. (The original "Amalgamate Item" would of course remain as a take or something like that, quickly restorable and tweakable again...)

For post production this is a great way to keep important little bits when picture cut changes happen, and then happen again and you have to bring stuff back. This item would be to multiple items like a normal audio item is to an audio file.

Additional useful functions for this kind of item are:

1) Exposure of tracks in this item to control surfaces when this part editor is open. Optionable lock of control surface controls to those tracks, so you can edit outside that item as well.

2) Implode selected items to Amalgamation Part to a selectable target track or new track
This implies way more than just the items. It implies the track settings, including plugins and automation of the area in which the selected items were. Everything! Optionable deletion of source tracks

4) Explode Amalgamation Part to New Tracks

5) Optionable horizontal zoom and position sync between Amalgamation Part Editor and arrangement view.

so let me see if I got this right:

amalgamation item, is essentially the same as a midi item except for audio samples/items rather than midi note events.

It is a container that opens in a midi-like editor in which you can arrange audio (and midi?) items on tracks like a mini arrange window.

Copying an amalgamation item copies all its contents.
Ghost copies creates clones such that when you edit one it edits all.
unghost would release the selected amalgamation items from perpetuating edits to all its sisters.

essentially we are talking about the audio part, as seen in Cubendo, but not limited to audio, and multi timbrel complete with FX

Is that what you are talking about?

if so, you get my ++1 and I'll shine Justin's shoes for such a wicked feature!

Maybe Justin or someone could come up with a bit catchier/easier name if this super-cool FR gets implemented. I'd personally propose "Poly-Item" but anything goes of course, a name is just a name...Wouldn't these indeed be folders of some sort?

+1, nicely described.

Would be nice too if you could select multiple items across tracks, then ->create amalgamation part, and have all the FX, items etc setup correctly within the amalgamation part.

you're right, almost same feature: in fact, for me amalgamation track should simply be a folder, and unfolding should show the tracks directly in the sequencer (mean no need for an external editor+"normal" fx on tracks+tracks in mixer+everything else you got with a proper folder.

how about the amalgation part is a REAPER-Project being treated as a clip?
double-click: opens the project
play while open: plays both in realtime
and when the "amalgation part" is closed, it's being rendered.

that way we could kick ass in mastering!

Default Wonderful Addition

This would really make Reaper a 'Greater' contender to the others out there! Awesome concept really. I always had to render my tracks to a stereo track and save my project as before the render and as is. Great concept.

Yes, I would use this as a sliced loop container.

(It will be especially nice when we can drag REX files into it...)

Actually, why not MIDI and audio in the same container? Loops where any slice could be plain audio, played by a sampler or synthesized...

actually this would be a Reaper-in-Reaper, so the sub-session (or call it AmalgamationPart) could contain Audio AND MIDI items.

as i wrote in the first post of this thread.

In fact I already did do something similar when I was compiling a new cd master, a few days ago. I had two instances of Reaper open, one with the original project and the other with the master project. If I wanted a change in the mix of one of the files in the master project I would switch to the original project, make the necessary changes, render and go on with the new mix in the master project. It's really easy workflow. But, if you guys want amalgamation included, I'm +1 with it.

yup earlabs,

http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthre...=render+window

this helps a bit, but this "2nd Reaper" cant run in absolute sample accurate sync with its 'parent' session.

i can't build up/tweak a 2 bar audio based multitrack beat looped - while listening a 16 bar Chorus part/arrange that way.

plus there are some issues working that way with UAD for eg.

oh yeas, reaper projects as clips. that would be sooo great.
best would be if one can choose to initially load a "project clip" rendered or realtime.
this is a sooo great way to reaUse sketched project. (i often do only the beat, or a nice progression and save this as a project for later. you could easyly name this feature reaUse.

I know I'm way late, but I think this sounds pretty close to Logic's folder concept, or packing data into a "region."

If I'm right, this is essentially region based audio, exactly how logic works midi wise, but this is like the step ahead.

If this is it, then this is great for me.

++1 ! Woo hoo ! And a very clear video beatbybit !

As it's closely related to the "horizontal folder" FR, maybe it would be a good idea to combine these two into a single power feature ? For instance if you close the window +modifier, it would mix in real time (without rendering to a new .wav). Or, depending on the Preferences, it would always/never ask.

Also I wonder if the good old Logic method of opening the amalgamation part/folder is not a bit faster:

1) double click the part to open it in the *same* Arrange window (just like Windows' "Explore in the same window").

2) double click the Arrange background to return to the main Arrange view (or one level up if the items are nested).

3) double clicking +modifier would open the sub-items in a new window.

PS. Is there a way to lock a regular item so only its visible portion is looped ? Ah, these "infinite ghost loops" by keycommands in Logic...
