Default Snap cursor, marker, time selection to item

Hi,

it would be very nice, if there were an option to make cursor, markers and time selection snap to the start/end of an item.

Also moving the cursor with a handle in the timeline (like the markers) would be fine. (done in 2302pre3)

Thanks,
Blechi

If you click on the end of an item, or start, the cursor snaps to it (when you see the double headed horizontal arrow). Then the marker will snap to the cursor. But indeed, there should be an option for the snapping you suggest without the workaround.

(I just noticed scrubbing is silenced if you press the shift key - was that mentioned before?)

The workaround is what i'm using now, but why work around, when it's easier to have it as an option...

(The 'mute scrub with shift toggle' is mentioned in the audio options menu. But i think it would be better to have it muted as standard and unmute it by pressing shift or something like that. This way one wouldn't have to stumble through the options menu when scrubbing is needed and the ears would appreciate this too... (edit: DONE))

++1 for this one.I can't believe this feature isn't implemented yet.

This is one of the features I need (will use) the most: auto-snap time selection area to media item start/end.

Snapping should be restricted to items on the selected track or the track under the mouse cursor (I find the second method better)

I replied to this already, but misread the OP.

Yes. Snap Loop and or time (depending on what's being drawn) to item the item beneath the mouse.

"but If I am drawing a loop in the time-line..." you say. Well if you start drawing your loop selection in the time line and then move down to the arrange without releasing the mouse, the loop selection continues to draw, and at that point it could snap to the edges of items beneath the mouse:

Talli, in your example you are snapping to grid, not to items. With the grid turned off cursor, time selection etc. don't snap to start/end of items.

BTW: Time selection doesn't snap to loop start/end. The loop start/end do snap to time selection, but not the other way around. Is this new ?

EDIT: Perhaps some kind of snap matrix would be good, where you can specify what snaps to what.

Hi Blechi,

don't know, whether I understand what you really want to do, but how about doubleklicking the item?

you are correct! That clip is just to illustrate that, if you begin drawing a loop selection from the timeline, that you could lower the mouse such that the selection could snap to the item below the cursor.

Come on guys,
Why wouldn't this be a great feature! Click on the timeline, and the cursor snaps to the nearest item start, end, split, and crossfades. See video demo Here:
Snapping From Timeline
See this also:

++1 for this. Let's get it going.

Thanks.

Blechi also suggested implicating snapping to samples, when zoomed in horizontal in this FR. This is a quick demo (using Samplitude)

Ok, I don't get snap to samples. When you zoom in that close, the sample level, samples are the only real time measurement so where else would the cursor be snapping to or why or how could or would anyone make an edit between samples?

Or am I missing something?

Snap to sample would prevent confusing behaviour like this:

My suggestion would be a little different:
call ist "magnetic cusor", "magnetic marker", "magnetic time selection", "magnetic item" and so on...

This is a very useful feature and was already in a quite similar way in Triple Dat implemented.

There was also a "magnetic grid".

To much words for an easy thing just confuses the people.

Maybe it would be good to put some functions together, but it should be selectable by the user.

Hi,
I can understand what you saying. The mockup in the above post lets the users select the settings they want for this FR. For me,it doesn't really matter what it's called, as long as we can click on the timeline, and have the cursor snap to the nearest item start, end, split, etc. while the grid turned off.
Thanks, Wyatt

AFAIK Reaper's subsample accurate editing is a "side effect" of the ability of playing (and resampling) any samplerates on on the fly.

its a hell in an OCD point of view, but it means nothing for 99.999% of the users.

i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish.. (no copy-paste used, this is how hard i wish, i wish, i wish this option.)

SNAP TO PROJECT SAMPLERATE : !!!!

but,

not only the item starts, markers, etc - but also the item content! without this, we still can have an item which starts at a correct sample point - but not, because its content is rounded to X or Y. not predictable - and yes, there are uses of sample accurate editing in real life.

it just requires having that OCD..

I Like it simple. A music programm must be simple - too complicated things and names maybe something good for technical freaks, i prefer doing music, not doing any programming.
And why inventing new expressions, if there's allready good expression for the same function in other - well known - programms?

I think, a musician who can play edits quite different than a mouse-musicians, the last ones need that grid, the first ones need a tool für free editing, so there are different requirements.

It's hard to get that all together...

With this extra row, the user is able to specify how snap affects envelope nodes positioning in reference to grid, item edges, etc.

A small addition to the mock up, but a great addition to the snap feature set: currently, imho the way snap affects (or doesn't affect) envelope nodes positioning is a tad obscure...

Thanks,

I agree with the rest of the requests as well.

One thing, shouldn't you be able to snap
selection-selection (e.g. new selection where the last ended),
marker-marker (e.g. time marker to marker, marker to region),
and cue-cue (a cue in an item on a neighbor track)?

June bump for this. The mockup has now been updated to include media cues. I know that the feature request rules state just one at a time,
but I think that if the cursor were implemented to snap from the timeline, the rest of them may come. It depends on the developers.
I hope the devs are up for this challenge.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Wyatt
