Sad time with Reaper lately, crashes galore - this time the SWS Region Playlist
Has anyone else experienced a crash every time without fail when the Region Playlist is set to play?
I really hope someone knows what's up.
Yes it's a very specific crash, but happening every single time I hit that SWS Region Playlist 'play' button.
Sad times indeed. Can't work.

That would not be a Reaper issue but a SWS issue.
However, over here it doesn't crash. Are you on latest version of SWS?

I was on the latest version. But a reinstall of the same version has seemed to fix it.
Reaper has been buggy as hell lately, so I blamed it on the DAW itself.
It's a very capable DAW and I've been pushing it to its limits with my template: routing, use of subprojects, band-splitting, regions & playlist, etc. I don't know if it's this but it simply has not handled my demands well.
Anyway I'm glad to have fixed this SWS playlist issue. Thank you.
Edit: Spoke too soon. Crashing upon Playlist play again, but only in my project. In an empty project it's OK. Before it was crashing in both.

I've no idea what SWS is and I don't think I need it.
That said, I have one particular project that I've had trouble with.
If I tried to open it before having been in any other project REAPER would crash to desktop and I then need to restart to release the audio interface. REAPER would be persistent in task manager and no amount of forcing it to close would get rid of it.
If I opened an empty project first, that would sometimes allow me to then open the problematic project.
Eventually, I thought I'd try freezing some of the later tracks added. The first one I rendered was an instance of Noire, that runs within the free Kontakt Player VST.
That seems to have fixed my issue, for now...
Could there be an issue with Kontakt Player?
I have other projects with Kontakt Player in and they open and play fine...
Apologies if this has no baring on this topic. I wanted to share the fact that I, too, have been having what I would call very, very rare problems with REAPER.

Thanks for sharing that.
It's very frustrating but it's good to know I'm not the only one.
What I really want is to understand what is happening - there are no crash reports being generated, and this new crash (occurring when I set Region Playlist to 'play') is brand new as of today.
Why is it happening? Is it a plugin? Is it my settings? What is the thing that's causing it, I just wish I knew. With no crash log it's difficult to zone in on the problem.
DAW behavior is so strange sometimes, and it's getting to me big time because I can't actually get to work. Hours and hours spent on restarting projects, and trying to diagnose the problem.
Why can't Reaper just be stable and handle what you throw at it?
... Now Reaper won't open at all. And I have to restart my machine for the 10th time today.
"Why" is all I want to know.

Does it happen in an empty project with no plugins, just some regions set up, then you hit play in region playlist?

It IS the most stable DAW that I know of, so I'm thinking something weird is happening on your machine, for some reason...

I think it is something on my side, but have no idea what. The crashes have been coming aplenty.
The thing is, I'm not using any new plugins that I wasn't before.
Maybe it's the latest update, as that's when the crashes started coming. It's been a nightmare week.

SWS and ReaPack are the 2 must haves for anyone using Reaper regularly. Since Reaper is about customization, SWS adds many more functions/actions to give you more abilities and ReaPack is a great way to add more great actions using user repositories. ReaPack makes adding new actions and updating them easy.

Update: After removing certain plugins and changing various settings to no avail, the thing that is working for me so far (fingers are crossed) is increasing my buffer from 1024 to 2048 samples.
I wish I thought of this earlier, but there was absolutely no crackling in my audio playback so I did not think the buffer size was an issue.
Maybe it was just too much work for Reaper when playing through the Region Playlist. I hope this is finally a fix.

Also run latencymon to see if anything is slowing you down.

I do have a specific "hang" issue with the latest version of Kontakt (PC) (while the previous one did work fine). Right now NI is waiting on additional tests I promised to do in the weekend.

It's basically a free suite of cybernetic enhancements for Reaper. Do you like walking everywhere or would you prefer to fly?

SWS Extensions are a highly-regarding addition to Reaper. I can't live without them. From the Custom Actions to the color options... etc. etc. etc. You need SWS Extensions, friend!
As far as the OP goes... you did say you push the DAW to its absolute limits. That could possibly be the reason. I never do projects with a ton of tracks, and stay around 256 buffer, latency-wise which I'm more than happy with. If I need super-tight midi latency I'll go down to 128 or 64, but that needs to be done early in my project.
I have two systems I run Reaper on:
1 (laptop): Windows 7, 64-bit, 32gb ram. 2nd Gen Quad-core i7. SSD system and audio drive (525gb system drive, 1tb audio). Runs flawlessly, using Asio4all (midi-only stuff) or Focusrite Asio (Scarlett Solo, or 2i4).
2 (tower): Windows 7, 64-bit, 32gb ram. 4th Gen Quad-core i7. SSD system drive (240gb) and two 1tb SSDs for audio. Runs flawlessly, same way. I'm using a 20-year old audio interface with that one (M-Audio Delta 66 / Omni I/O)... PCI interface, combined with breakout box. Flawless performance.
Again, I don't push my system to the limits, at all. So that could definitely have something to do with it.... hope you find a lot less crashes! Also, be sure to always export your Reaper configuration through Preferences, before you update.
If you need to roll back, you can install an older version, import your config, and you're golden.

Well, thank you for elaborating.
Thing is, though, REAPER works fine out of the box for me, notwithstanding the latest little issue of crashing to desktop. I don't even bother with the faff of trying any of the various customised schemes.
I also go to the trouble of actually un-setting most of my keyboard shortcuts, lest I inadvertently mess something up with my fat fingers.
I do use REAPER quite a bit at the moment. Sometimes seven days a week for a couple of hours or more each day. But I ain't no pro... Just an out of work dude filling up his time with something worthwhile.
But thanks again for your input
cheers
andy

My sentiments exactly. I don't need no steenking helper stuff bolted on when everything I need is included with a stock install of REAPER.
