Naming CC Lanes [DONE!]
Now that we have integrated MIDI note naming, it would be great if we could also name CC message lanes (and load .txt files containing a list of CC names).
I'm thinking of those VST(i)s that use extensive MIDI CC control rather than VST parameters. For example SampleTank 2.5 and related ROMPlers.
SampleTank has only 6 VSTi parameters for each Instrument and even these depend on how the Instrument has been programmed - some only have 2 effective parameters, Volume and Pan. However each Instrument has dozens of controls, each assignable to a MIDI CC.
So you could assign CC56 to any of the controls, you would see "56" in the MIDI Editor. Wouldn't it be much better if it said "MMoog Pitch" or "AmpEnv Attack" or "Punch" or ...?
That way when you return to the project you will not have to search around to find out what knobs you are controlling.

I thought I'd be the only one that would like to see that. Yeah, some instruments like RealStrat or the Garritan Stradivari (just to mention two) come with arkward controller assignments. It would be very cool if I could rename cc 67 to Vibrato Rate and cc 11 to bow pressure, as an example.
I'll +1 this. Although the team is deep into midi enhancement at the moment, and there is a lot of more important stuff to be done. Like selecting events in the cc lanes...

50 views and only one +1 for this
Come on, take pity on those of us with VSTis with few parameters but many CC-controllable knobs. And those with external synths that can be controled by MIDI CC. - What a boon this could be.
... Put your +1s below.

+1! I'm still deciding if Reaper is right for me, but this I think is the last annoyance that I might just live with since it seems to do everything else I need and more... but it'd be real nice to not have to print out a CC list for all my gear!

The Cakewalk instrument definition files (which Reaper partially can read) already can contain friendly CC names. I think it would be most useful to integrate this functionality into Reapers own note name files as well. That way only one file needs to be loaded.
Actually I'd like to see a file format that integrates the data from *.reabank + note names + cc names into one file. (Maybe that is even the case right now with reabank and note names? I don't know, as I never need bank and patch names. That way an instrument would be completely set up in the MIDI editor and ReaControlMIDI by loading one single file.
It would also be cool if the MIDI editor's view options could be set up in that file by some commands, so with loading that file the editor could automatically switch to eg. diamonds with note names active, unnamed notes hidden. Just by loading one file note names, bank and patch names, CC names and view options could be set and you are ready to go.
The icing would be if a ReaControlMIDI instance on that track would somehow also get the information and load the same file...

Totally +1
Actually... I didn't know about this thread when I made a similar FR few weeks/months ago:
http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=1430
(not as clear as DarkStar's FR I admit... for some reason I realize I forgot to add the word "name" about everywhere!)

Is that the Dev's you are talking about? (sorry if thats a dumb question)
Anyway there are a lot of complaints about Reapers lack of Midi features on other forums...its hard to post anything without someone saying Reaper is a good enough audio app but the midi is no good and its lagging way behind the competition etc...etc....
So it would be great it if the Dev's do some serious work in this area.
Cheers

The post you're quoting is a tad old, Juli 08, how time flies .
Reaper's MIDI has been improved on lots of aspects since, but the cc event selection part (in the piano roll - you can of course select cc in the event list, that was possible even back then) still stands.
I do lots of MIDI all within Reaper (with the help of Logic as MIDI front-end). It is by far not as bad as some say.

Jeez Sorry bout that!!
I did not even look at the date.(duuuhh)
I use Logic on the front end too...from the Mac to Reaper on the PC running some of the VST stuff (LOL!!) works well, took a bit of setting up tho.
I agree about the midi is not as bad as some say...there is always a host of ex users, part time users and some users that are ready to jump on you if you say anything positive about Reapers midi on KVR and other forums.
One of the things I would like to see tho is some dedicated tools (assignable) especially for the piano roll and some more work in the events list.
But I am not chomping on the bit about this tho.
Cheers

This would be sooo nice! ...and improve workflow a great deal for me. I work with hardware gear a lot. And most of them do not follow the cc definitions standard.
Hey DarkStar, maybe you could edit the first post to include the voting link?

In my opinion, this is definitely not one of these "capricious" feature requests : it would just be usefull, neither more nor less.
As DarkStar wrote it above, in many VST instruments, CC lanes are widely used to map various functionalities.
So instead of having CC11, CC83 etc wroten on my screen, I'd rather like to see : "Legato mode", "Play harmonics" or whatever.
Thank you

As said above by gofer, it would be awesome if .ReaBank format would be extended with note naming and CC naming. It makes a LOT of sense, and shouldn't be too hard to do - current .ReaBank files would still work, without the additions.

+ 1.
Many of my vsti's use a CC for this and that. It would be really helpful to be able to load a CC names file for Jamstix or my Mtron so I don't have to re-invent the (mod?) wheel each time. This FR would certainly help in this regard.

Blast from the past. I love it. Thanks for digging this one out, Tod
For me personally the awesome part is we can properly select CC in the meantime. Yay I don't need to hijack threads to plug that one anymore. Now let's call them all names
By the way, talking of the past: When the thread started out, +1, ++1, -1 and --1 were actually counted by the FR Vote Counter. Till hooked that up and it served as the predecessor of the issue tracker. The site isn't maintained anymore but still up, have a look over here:
http://reaperfr.tillmannn.de/
Of course it's not representative anymore (never really was, but everybody knew that and it was good enough for us), even if it might still be counting (dunno). This particular request counts +17 and is #54 of the list.
YAY ++1. Don't forget to leave your mark in the issue tracker : http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=1773

I'm also here for quite some time now (not as long as some other ol' bones though) but I never was aware of that side.
Interesting blast from the past.
Thanks for mentioning it.
