Multiple comps at different points in a song
Hi all
Apologies for any muddled terminology here, hopefully you can get that I mean.
With the new fixed item lanes, if I want to do multiple takes and then move into a later section in the song and again do multiple takes on that same track (and do this several more times) what's the best way to organise this? By default it seems like I'll be left with a long list of lanes on that track, relating to the whole duration of the song, where for each individual section only a few lanes are relevant.
E.g. in logic the individual takes are contained within a comp region and be collapsed / expanded separately for individual sections of the song.
One answer I can think of is to finish the comp and delete unused lanes before moving on but I'm ideally looking to just focus on recording first and then comping later.

Check "record into first available lane".

Thanks for the response. That option is automatically checked and also greyed out (no option to uncheck).
It creates a new lane at the bottom if I do any recording on that track later in the song, even if all the above lanes are empty at this point in the song. So I'd end up with a huge number of (mostly empty) lanes if hoping to get a collection of takes for different sections of the song
Or am I missing something obvious?

In the fixed lane button right-click menu, if you have 'Layer new lanes' enabled -- which means that new lanes will play in addition to already-playing lanes, instead of playing exclusively -- then recording will always go into new lanes. This is to avoid the situation where new recording goes into an existing lane that wasn't already playing.
We could probably remove this dependency, though, and instead add some logic to make sure that if the user has both 'Layer new lanes' and 'Record into first available lane' enabled, that new recording always goes into lanes that are already playing.

Hi Schwa - thanks for the reply, really appreciate it!
I'll need to get my head around how all this works.
Is there any way to hide some lanes? I'm imagining an action like "for selected track, hide all lanes with no items in time selection" combined with "for selected track, show all lanes with items in time selection" would let you quickly make a time selection, filter out the irrelevant lanes and just focus on comping within the time selection (i.e the lanes which have items in them but in a different part of the song).
Then it wouldn't matter if I did end up with loads of mostly empty lanes, I could easily focus on just the necessary bits at any point in the song.
The only playing lane would be the comp lane in this scenario.
