The entry will be saved if you hit enter or tab. Before v6.83, there was a bug where the entry would be saved even if you hit escape, the behavior you are seeing is the result of that fix. We can change this so the entry is also saved if you click in another metadata field, or if you click OK or Apply while the field is still being edited.
Oh, wow I used to just type in the metadata and then click another field for the next data. It never even crossed my mind to try hitting Enter because I was so used to just clicking another field.
