Hi there, is there a way to set this for the whole project?
Item have this setting available : ![]() but Project Settings does not: ![]() Am I missing something, or what is the intended workflow? Do I have to set each individual item to "timebase:auto stretch" every time I add something to the project? There must be a way to set this project-wide?

I'm constantly having the opposite battle. I want a setting that makes it so items, item length, audio, or midi content will ALWAYS IGNORE changes to tempo and time signature and stay at their position in regards to time. I really wish Reaper would consider doing an overhaul to allow users to change settings that are "per item" to global "per project", or even "per track".

There's not, which is kind of an oversight, we can add that.

With MIDI items, I don't think there's any way to set multiple media items at once to use a fixed tempo. It's a reasonable request (I think) to have an action that would set MIDI items to use a fixed tempo that is an average of the project tempo during the media item, although that could lead to some odd corner cases if you have multiple pooled MIDI items with different tempos, etc. |

Thanks Schwa. 99% of stuff I work on is constant BPM, but in the last year more and more of these young artists have been asking for tempo changes and ramps. Embracing it with open arms lol but yeah this would be super helpful so that from the onset all items will follow tempo changes by default in this usecase.

Cubase has a feature where you can set the track, right on the TCP, to be set to beats or time. This really should be a track, rather than item setting.
Try having a session with 500 midi items over 70 tracks, and change the time signature from 6/4 to a bar of 4/4 and a bar of 2/4. This can be a nightmare. I really hope that devs consider making changes to move away from the "by the item" settings, especially when it comes to midi items. I've never encountered a situation where I want one midi item in one track to behave differently from an item in that same track. |

There are per-track timebase settings in Reaper, too...

...which are ignored by MIDI items.

Just to chime in about this: have you ever tried to tempo-map a MIDI performance in REAPER? Doing it with audio is pretty straightforward, but MIDI items fight you all the way.
There's an SWS action to "SWS/BR: Enable "Ignore project tempo" for selected MIDI items preserving time position of MIDI events (use tempo at item's start)" which I think does essentially what the new built-in action is doing. But even with the SWS action, it's still pretty difficult. Some sort of simple "absolute time" mode for MIDI items (or close to it, given the limitations of MIDI time) would be very, very welcome. Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread, and I certainly appreciate the new action in the current pre-release build.

I was just about to mention tempo mapping...
To make this feature really really useful, a toggle action would be amazing. Something that we can put in a toolbar or monitor with a script, in order to see, if the current selected item is tempo or time based.

A while ago I imported an MP3 of a piano piece, did some basic tempo mapping, and then in a track underneath, transcribed it note for note to MIDI. But then I realised that some of my tempo markers weren't quite right, but it is virtually impossible to change them without also moving the MIDI notes which were all in the right place in terms of lining up with the audio. So really looking forward to trying out this feature in 7.08 and seeing if it helps.

Returning to this!
I tempo-mapped an off-the-grid song, so that the grid is adapted to the live tempo. Now I want to add more production elements. Every time I import a new item, each item needs to separately be set to "Timebase : Beats (Auto-stretch at tempo changes)". This is something that should be project-wide toggleable, given that it needs to be done for Every item Every time in this use case. Just hope the workflow can be normalized here, so that if a Project is tempo-mapped we can set a Project Setting "All imported media timebase will Auto-stretch at tempo changes". Thoughts? Thank you!

There is Preferences / Media / Import / After adjusting tempo, set imported media to auto-stretch at tempo changes.

Hi,
I know this is a old thread. But I am using Reaper 7.0001, I am working on a mash up and I am having trouble getting a media item's bpm to obey a project BPM setting. I have right clicked and selected time "Set item timebase to project", "Set Item Timebase to time", "Set item timebase to beats (auto-stretch at tempo changes), nothing seems to do the trick. Am I missing something? |
