Default Reaper Crashing due to Dry Run..

Reaper is doing a hard crash while using the Dry Run feature.

This first happened when I was trying to adjust a volume knob in Kontakt while the Dry Run was running. Since then it has crashed when trying to adjust anything when the Dry Run was running.

I'm sorry I can't remember exactly what I was trying to move each time. When it crashes, Reaper just totally closes and disappears. It's sudden and it's one of those "Oh Shit" situations.

This has probably happened a half dozen times, or maybe more in the last 4 or 5 months.

I'm not sure how to create a crash log?

I don't see how you're able to adjust anything in REAPER during a render, dry run or otherwise, because the render dialog is modal and should prevent you from focusing any other REAPER window. Unless you are running Kontakt in bridged mode? If so, are you running it bridged intentionally, because there would definitely be a performance cost from doing so.

Instructions about finding a crash log are here:

Thats what I thought, but with plugin open I start a Dry run, and can still adjust params with my mouse.

Win10, REAPER v7.15_x64

Ah I see. Well the obvious response is, don't adjust FX parameters while rendering but we can see how tricky it is to disable those windows during a render. Note this is only an issue on Windows.

while looking at that, please also consider disabling control surfaces during render. during a batch render queue the controller really doesn't need to be moving at all until the queue is done.

When you run the REAPER installer there's an option to enable dump file generation, if you enable that, then run REAPER, and duplicate the crash, it should generate a dump file that you can send us. For more info see https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=36653

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I've had some med issues.

It just happened to me again and yeah, it happened when I tried moving a knob in Kontakt. It didn't crash until I clicked the "Cancel" button.

I tried to get to the dump file and got to the "Application Error", but when I use Ctrl+F to find REAPER, the window closed on me.

At any rate, I know not to touch anything while "Dry Run" is running, but my old brain has a tendency to forget this.

Isn't that what this is?
v7.15+dev0501 - May 1 2024
+ Control surfaces: add option to close devices while rendering
+ Control surfaces: do not send feedback to open devices while rendering

Aah OK, thanks Edgemeal, I missed that. I saw something on "v7.15+dev0502" that I thought might be it, but guess I was wrong.

If you set REAPER to generate dump files, and had a crash, then do:

Start->Run, paste in:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps

Hit enter. That should open the path that will have a REAPER dump file in it, hopefully. zip that up and upload somewhere and email us a link!
