Default Moving items and notes under the playback-cursor

Justin,

any chance to get items to mute when moving them under the playcursor while playback.

So you grab a item -> move it via dragging

=> now you should never hear the item unless you release the mousebutton to drop the item at its new position.

Same for moving notes in the MIDI editor under the playcursor:

Would be great if that could be disabled if "Preview on add/edit" is disabled by the user. So a moved note could only be heard if the playback cursor gets to the start of this note again. DONE (3.04)

I like it as is, because it´s easy to realign a clip while playin, rough with the mouse, and then finetune with the shortcuts.

maybe even two options. one for audio-items and one for midi-items. for me the current behaviour is especially "annoying" for midi-items.

Yeah I can see this being an issue for MIDI items cos they wouldn't be playing properly.

I think where audio is concerned it's definitely a question of what you prefer to hear at the time.

For MIDI, there should definitely be an option or even hardcoded to mute the part. I vote for hard-coded.

A keyboard shorcut option as I'm dragging would be nice for some instances and a preference to turn it completely off if needed.

From a post production perspective a "move the clip under the cursor"-feature would be quite useful, and I'll tell you why.

Syncing to anything. Want something to be in a certain spot, you SCRUB the region underneath the cursor until it is where you want it. Hearing is believing in our line of work, not simply seeing, and it's faster too.

This interface feature has precedence in some workstations.

There are variations too.

The Fairlight workstations (custom rigs with their own editing surface) had a "Stick the region to the playhead" feature, which was worth gold for syncing sound to picture. Forget the extra steps you need to take in Protools, where you place a sync point in a region, then find the place you want the sync point to go and shortcut-click on the region. Extra steps. Extra work. More fiddle and clutter.

So yeah, I totally support that request, especially if it also includes SCRUBBING a region along under the cursor. Hearing what you do is important.

I really miss being able to paste in an item from the clipboard while playing - be it audio or MIDI - and to hear it as it went past.

Cubase does it (but it's Cubase! ) - and I always wanted this is a DAW for visual work where you needed to spot things while playing.

Someone suggested making a shortcut to pause, paste, play but pasting makes the play cursor jump forward to after the item, whereas you want to hear the item "live"!

yep, +1. Moving MIDI items can be a real pain - for the ears with this "on". OTOH, for audio, it's a big and excellent feature for syncing stuff in real-time. Maybe just an option to turn it off separately for MIDI and audio would be cool, or an option in menu like ther's for snapping, smooth seeking and stuff.

Cheers!

Default massive WHACK from monitors on moving clips underneath playcursor

The problem with R. is that it is so fast to do things.

So, i've taken to doing things i can't with other DAWs because it's really quick to work that way. One thing is that i now find i'm moving item clips whilst the transport is running and pushing them around in funky ways even before the play cursor gets there. Man, this is productive.

BUT wait! Everytime i whip something away from the Reaper whilst it's actually playing, i get a huge 'WHACK' from my monitors (well, anyway, a kind of 'ripping' sound) and then everything mutes (thankfully -- that's a great feature).

Please, no 'move-clip-whack'. Anyway to mute this, so when something is dragged, it doesn't whack.

Thank you kindly

With all the mute and note-off fixes and additions in the 2.45previews Reaper now got a lot more ear-friendly IMO.

Still, moving items and notes at playbackcursor positon is no fun.

Bumping this up, a very needed feature for me as I do a lot of
arranging while the song is playing, and playing the grabbed items
until releasing the mouse produces very annoying glitches.

Voted in tracker.

Maybe the easiest way to describe it is "items acting as muted while we're dragging them" (whether or not it's under the play cursor isn't really an issue in the code, I guess)

I know some are just after the MIDI side due to sticking notes that don't reach their note-offs etc..

So as a suggestion.. what about having two prefs:
"mute items with active audio takes while dragging"
"mute items with active MIDI takes while dragging"

Does this issue still exist in v4?
Very annoying when dragging midi clips thru the playback cursor during playback.

Please Cockos, let's turn attention toward getting rid of
main annoyances in editing workflows.
