Pretty well covered in other threads, I'd say.

I recently had to liven up a "dead" orchestral recording and these were my notes at the time:-

"I've hardly ever tried the Classic free Reverb but after very little tweaking got a perfectly acceptable result - it seemed capable of adding more depth of acoustic than I actually wanted without sounding artificial.

Then Ambience - this donationware reverb seems to have a good reputation although it's quite a resource hog - I tried several presets from the extensive set provided and quickly found one that only needed a little tweak.

Next the Karma FX reverb - not bad, not quite up there with the preceding two, but well worth a try.

Finally, the Wurr Audio reverb - I don't recall really trying it before but was pleasantly surprised with the result I quickly got - no separate control of decay (just "size") but still the result seemed very nearly as good as Ambience or the Classic Reverb. Again it could be pushed into providing a larger than necessary reverb without sounding artificial. "

Not free, but the first one I've ever paid money for - Rayspace.

Ambience is my go to reverb for drums. If your running an athlon chip the cpu is pretty low,for some reason it chews up pentiums..
Glaceverb is another verb I use.It has lots of character too.
Anwida DX lite is good for gated reverbs, and also overall good for many aplications.
I like the Karma fx verb too by the way.It has some nice character to it.

thanks everyone.
might i suggest a sticky ?
how about cool fx that dont suck that , and this is important
i feel...that dont require a hi power pc to run.
ie....like reaper, elegent and sound good that dont consume
a ton of pc resources.

I really like FreeverbToo. It's become one of my go to verbs. Very dense and platey. Dx or Vst. Great on drums.

Yup, just refreshed my ears' memory of that one - haven't used it for some time due to some issues with other editing software I normally use.

Dudes, have you ever try to talk or sing in a washmashine? Get on 4 legs, put your head deep in the hole and try it / but watch out if someone is behind you! This is the effect i want to find...

Yep, I would certainly check Glaceverb out, it comes with an interesting range of presets as well. Look for it here:

Well, i don't know if what you're after is having somebody behind you or reaching the washing machine sound, but if it is the second one, just make an Impulse Response of your washing machine, and use it in SIR...
If it is the first one, i can't help you...

Scum, would you be interested in doing so, read:
http://www.synaudcon.com/irexch/file...r_Overview.pdf

after downloading this free convolver
http://www.catt.se/download_area.htm#Gratis

by the makers (http://www.catt.se/) of the rather expensive and high quality FIReverb Suite.

But it might be easier to tweak Glaceverb's Metal Tube Inside preset till you're head to toe inside the machine.

You should find very good tutorials in noisevault.com
To do it the best way, it is a bit hard (you need a gun ! ! !), but else, just drop a "vanilla sound" (for example a very short white noise with short attack & decay) in your washing machine, and record the sound you get out from it.
It should do the trick.
I remember having seen a site of a man who made IR from his car, in the bathroom, in a flower pot, toys, etc...
So it is possible to do it everywhere (but i haven't got the skills to tell you how in every circumstances...)

That's the nice thing about Rayspace - you draw what you want, and off you go! There's a scale knob so that you can draw a larger than life washing machine, then scale it down.

you can try with a more basic mic and something that produces a short percusive sound (maybe even the clicking of an empty plastic ball gun ? or paintball gun ?).
Not top quality, but effective and useable...

The washing machine impulse response is already available! It was made by Fokke van Saane who posted it here:

http://www.audioease.com/IR/VenuePag...tml#kingsplate
(see the Claustrophobia file, with the washing machine & microphone pic!)

He also did a dustbin, a bucket, two glass flower pots, a glass pot of chocolate spread, a coal hod and of course a vacuum cleaner tube.

Downloading however is reserved for authorized Altiverb users.

Some links to free impulses (load them in SIR, for instance):

http://www.noisevault.com/index.php?...tory&Itemid=29
(noisevault's collection is rather superb)

http://www.voxengo.com/impulses/

http://www.memi.de/echochamber/responses/index.html (German)

http://www.xs4all.nl/~fokkie/IR.htm (Fokke van Saane, Mr. Washing Machine! - no wavs, downloads don't seem to work? - strange guy: " I made an impulse response of my mouth. You can't get more intimate to me then this")

that's still one of my main goto-reverbs as well after all these years - it is incredibly low on the cpu even at the highest quality setting and also includes a gate. Another fantastic (=great sound& low on the cpu) free reverb is Ariesverb (still Alpha for about one and a half years though and no gui) http://www.ariescode.com/

oh, and b.t.w.: personally I usually don't find convolution-reverbs very useful... (they sound cold as ice to me because of the missing modulation)

believe it or dont, this pipelineaudio here is the same pipelineaudio of noisevault. Justin is well aware of what can be done with impulses and has made some steps in that direction. *one of these days* when things are not terribly busy he may just not surprise you, but blow you away with something that will make you smile for days on end. He has already recieved the raw material to do so, and along with his skills, Reaper will cut a wide swath thru the doomed mortal apps

That's music to my ear, pipeline. And yes, I already found out you donated various impulses to noisevault, among them an impulse that does some magic for hi-hats if I remember well.
To me impulses are not only highly usable in trying to create a sound I'm dreaming off, they're part of the very philosophy/nature/science/whatever of SOUND itself. For what it's worth.

Yes, AriesVerb is very nice. But have you tried Voxengo Boogex ? It is preimary aied at being a guitar amp, but based on convolution, it can load custom IR with very low latency, and killer features.
A must try !
