In Reaper 4 the waveforms disappear unless I zoom in a lot more than I want to get the big picture. Is there a setting somewhere to turn this off? I can't find it.

Thanks, I've been there ...
I can't believe this. Unless I zoom in to two numbered ticks per bar or closer, there are no visible waveforms, only grey media blocks. Is it like that for all of you, or has a setting been changed in my setup? And where to change it back then?

Absolutely no idea, sorry. It works as it always did here and I don't know of a setting that hides peaks depending on zoom.
What happens when you rename the REAPER.ini file and restart Reaper with fresh preferences? |

Have you run out of diskspace where you keep your peak files? Maybe try to regenerate the peak files?

I have 2TB on the recording drive using only 25%.
Rebuilding peak files seemed to be the safest thing to try first, but it didn't make a difference. Then I renamed reaper.ini and the suddely waveforms were there no matter what zoom stage. Thanks for that advice. However, I didn't see Reaper build any new reaper.ini as many other programs do when the *.ini is missing. So I tried renaming the disabled ini back to reaper.ini again. Once more I lost waveforms when zooming out. But what happens if I permanently delete reaper.ini and it doesn't build a new one. Will I lose some settings I have made? Will I lose settings I make in the future because they aren't stored?

It will always build one if it cannot find one. Just make a backup copy every so often.
But, perhaps you can compare a "good" one and the problem one (they will open in a Text Editor) to see what the difference is. That would help track down the problem.

It builds a new one as soon as you close Reaper.
You lose a lot of your preference settings when starting with no REAPER.ini and let it rebuild. That's the bitter side of the story. So in your case, start a fresh one now and redo your preference settings for once. But, if you still have the broken one, keep it (renamed) and let the devs have a look for what might be the culprit and hopefully sort it out. I think I have seen another post with this problem somewhere. |

I am back after a trip to New York ...
I solved the problem this way: Renamed reaper.ini to reaperDISABLED.ini and a new reaper.ini was made, at least after a Win7 restart just in case ... The fresh reaper.ini contained very little whereas mine contained a lot, probably all my personalized settings etc. that I wouldn't want to lose. Since the new reaper.ini contained no lines with the word peak in it, I assumed it would be safe to delete all lines containing words with "peak". At most I would lose my personal preferences about peaks. After deleting all those lines it now works, and I still have all my other settings like Reamenus, SWS etc. But why did this problem occur. If there is no way to change it back using Preferences in Reaper, I cannot have changed it myself. So it may be something bug-like?

Again, if you still have the faulty REAPER.ini, please let the devs have a look at it.

I have this same issue. I need to zoom way in (about 3 seconds to cross the screen) for my waveforms to show up.
Tried "rebuild peaks" but no luck. Anyone got any other ideas? D.

Preferences> Media> (uncheck) "Store all peak cashes in alternate path"

Same issue for me. Tourtelot's solution got them back for me too. Seems like a bug in the "store reapeaks files to custom directory" feature to this day.
Thanks |

Try not releasing the audio driver while inactive. It somewhere in preferences if I recall correctly.

Hi,
I had the same problem. I solved it by renaming the file name, with a shorter one. REgards |

I see this has happened to many out there, not yet to me, so I am saving this thread in my stats folder since I do not know what a .ini file is. Thanks in advance for the info.

Just stumpled on this post, not having issues, but I've experienced this when the pathways folder and filenames are veery long.

Working on some fixes for this -- as a workaround if you set the option in preferences/peaks to use the alternate path when unable to write peaks, it should fix.
